Vincent Willem van Gogh blev født d. 30. marts 1853 i en lille landsby i Holland kaldet Zundert. I dag er han blandt de mest indflydelsesrige, og berømte kunstnere indenfor vestlig kunst.
I hele hans livstid solgte Van Gogh faktisk kun et enkelt billede. Selvom Van Gogh's liv var tragisk, efterlod han 850 malerier, og tæt på 1300 tegninger, som for eftertiden blev anerkendt for deres vigtighed, og genialitet.
